It is assumed that this breed had its beginning in the eighteenth century. It was separated in 1900, officially recognized after 1945, and its country of origin is the United States. With a high degree of probability, it can be said that the black and tan coonhound was created by crossing together the Virgilian foxhound, the Irish kerry beagle and the bloodhound. This gave him the unique characteristics of a tall, strong and sturdy mongrel dog.

First of all, it is a hunting hound, so it will be a good companion for a hunter on foot during hunting. It will also work well as a family friend, provided that it is given some space for physical activity. The Black and tan coonhound is a type of dog with an extremely social disposition, so it will not be bothered by other animals in or around the house. He can be used as a guard dog. Be sure to take him out for walks regularly because as a hunting dog, he has a very high need for activity. He is very active and as soon as he senses a game, he may unexpectedly throw himself into a chase. During walks, try to keep him rather short. Typically, the black and tan coonhound is used to hunt raccoons and opossums. However, they sometimes find their place alongside hunters hunting bear, deer or mountain lions. In the presence of outsiders and strangers, they tend to be aloof and less trusting. However, they do not behave aggressively and do not attack. They require a lot of determination from the owner to be properly taught the necessary commands. Importantly, however, it is not a particularly dominant dog.
